Personal Freedom vs. Collective Good

I – Personal freedom in its absolute form requires that an individual’s wants and needs take precedence over the wants and needs of all others.

II – When an individual’s wants and needs are placed above all other individuals wants and needs each individual will necessarily compete with each other individual.

III – Such competition inevitably causes unnecessary suffering for some individuals.

IV – When individuals place their own interests above all others, some will act in ways that are harmful, destructive, or abhorrent.

V – In a society that grants absolute personal freedom, no mechanism exists to restrict or prevent individuals from acting in harmful or abhorrent ways.

VI – Any attempt to restrict an individual’s harmful or abhorrent actions necessarily limits that individual’s absolute personal freedom.

VII – The act of restricting harmful or abhorrent behavior for the sake of others constitutes the creation and promotion of the Collective Good.
